One of the great things about The Upside is that it’s based on a true story. It’s also one of the most uplifting movies involving a caregiver in recent history. The story is about an ex-con played by Kevin Hart who stumbles his way into a job as a caregiver to a quadriplegic played by Bryan Cranston. Though initially reluctant to truly engage in his new role, Hart’s character finds himself intrigued by his new employer and the two soon develop a friendship. Through their unusual friendship, the two grow and find new joy in life.
Me Before You starring Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin
Emilia Clarke plays a young woman from a small town who is hired as a caregiver to a handsome young man who was recently paralyzed. The two develop a close relationship, but Clarke’s character finds herself faced with a difficult situation when Claflin’s character makes a choice she’s not in favor of. This movies deals with some of the tough emotions caregivers often have to deal with and learning where the lines are between caregiver and care recipient.
Still Alice starring Julianne Moore, Alec Baldwin, Kristen Stewart
Julianne Moore stars as a linguistics scholar, wife, and mother who is diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s disease at the age of 50. The diagnosis leads to two of her three adult children deciding to undergo genetic testing. The movie shows how Alzheimer’s affects families and what it’s like to care for someone as they slowly forget their loved ones and even themselves.
The Theory of Everything starring Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones
This movie chronicles the early life of famous physicist Stephen Hawking, played by Eddie Redmayne, and is diagnosis with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease). Felicity Jones plays his wife and the mother of Hawking’s three children. Through the course of his diagnosis and increasing need for care, the movie shows the strain a serious diagnosis can place on a relationship and the need for caregivers to take care of themselves first.
